Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (October, 1996)
Authors: Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden
Average review score:

Invaluable text for civil war collectors
This is a seminal collection of knowledge that no civil war book collection should be without! Written during the immediate aftermath of the war, it embodies all the sentiments and spirit of the times and is therefore an invaluable addition to the understanding of the civil war and of American history itself. An absolute "must have"!!

Original material of this composition
I have 27 issues of Harpers Pictorial magazines "History of the Civil War" originals. Copyrighted 1866 by Harper & Brothers and copyrighted in 1894 by the Star Publishing Co. of Chichago Illinois, who first ran the series of the contents of this book. The editors were Alfred H.Guernsey and Henry M. Alden. The cover and all of the illustrations were done in beautiful pen & ink. They originally sold for $.25 each and were considered to be worth twice their value at the time of print. This is an awesome collection of this material.

Invaluable contemporaneous source, marred by typical Racism.
Henry Mills Alden was the beloved step-father of my grandmother, Aline Kilmer. He was an editor of Harper's Magazine. This large and heavy tome is a 1996 facsimile edition of "Harper's Pictorial History of the Great Rebellion in the United States," first published in 1866. It reflects the horrifying bigotry of its times, evident in the writings of some of the most adamant of Northern Caucasian Abolitionists. The text, pictures, and maps are fascinating and invaluable to Civil War buffs such as my husband, Tim Slattery.

Great book for baseball lovers
I remember this reading this book in 7th grade and i will never forget it. It was writen with pride and dignity you felt that the great BAMBINO was a hero and he was to most people. I really recommend this book to baseball lovers and people who are interested with this topic. Oh Guernsey Van Riper and Seymour Fleishman did a excellent job writting and illustrating this book.

Babe Ruth- An All American Hero
I read this book a couple years ago, but haven't forgot it. It's great if you like learning about sports heros or baseball. I remember most baseball stuff. I even remember that 1 month after his first wife died in an apartment fire, Babe Ruth married again. I learned that from this book. Would you like to learn more? Then buy this book!!!

The Best Plays of 1997-1998 (Serial)
Published in Hardcover by Limelight Editions (December, 1998)
Authors: Otis L. Guernsey, Al Hirschfeld, and Jeffrey Sweet
Average review score:

Exceptional
This serial is the best theatre series in existence. The plays that are covered are: Ragtime, The Lion King, Art, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Gross Indecency and Pride's Crossing.

This book provides useful synopsis of each book, as well as an incredible summary of the year in New York Theatre.

The Lion King: If you only see one musical, see this one. I can't believe some people didn't like it. In a surprisingly tight race between this and Ragtime, The Lion King beat it out to win the best msuical Tony. It is easy to see why. To watch it on stage is stunning. The opening ten minute sequence has made history. I cannot even begin to describe the impact that it had on me, and the audience (by the time the elephants appeared in stage, the audience was weeping).

Get this book (and the next one if you can, along with all the previous ones).

The Ultimate Theatre Book
This is a true treasure of a book. What the editor does is he: Reviews the year in theatre for New York (Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway), which is great for theatre enthusiasts (like myself) who don't live anywhere near New York. Produces synopsis of the prize winning plays of the season (He covers the New York Critics, The Lortel, The Tony, and The Pulitzer prizes/awards). He used to choose ten of the best plays of the season, but changed to the abover system in the 1996-97 season. This season, the plays he covers are: Wit, Side Man, Fosse, Closer, Parade, and Not About Nightingales.

Also included are a whole schwak of pictures and lists of the award winners, the longest running plays, and an entire list of plays that made the Best Plays Yearbook before.

This is an absolute must for anyone with love for theatre. The reviews are great and intelligent, the synposis are fun to read, and the Hirschfelds are great to look at. This book will provide hours of a old-fashioned broadway lore, and you will be blissfully lost at home.

Classic Knits for Kids: Thirty Traditional Aran and Guernsey Designs for 0-6 Years
Published in Hardcover by Trafalgar Square (September, 1994)
Author: Debbie Bliss
Average review score:

Wonderful collection of kids sweaters
Bliss designed a great variety of styles, all attractive and all, sadly, only in children's sizing (many would make truly lovely adult sweaters). Difficulty level is not high -- some are fairly simple to make and the others are well worth the effort. Some are rugged sweaters, others decorative. Sweaters for boys and girls, too. The photography is nice and instructions are clear. Really a fabulous book.

inspiring patterns, a bit difficult for new knitters.
My husband and I started knitting while expecting our first child. Ms. Bliss' books contain photos of beautiful sweaters, caps and dresses which are very inspiring. The most classically fashionable that I've ever seen, and surprisingly not impossible to make. We also own her "Kids Country Knits" which is great. My husband's first ever knitting project was a large stuffed sheep, and his second a beautiful sailor collar style sweater with a family of ducks knitted into the design. Both turned out great!!! These patterns are in the "Kids Country Knits". I made a cute hat and sweater set from the "Classic Knits for Kids". I recommend her books as the instructions are understandable, versatile and the small child sizes take a short time to make.

Great book full of suspense!
I am a Teacher-Librarian. My students, other teachers in my school and I love this book. It is very suspenseful. A great novel to study about fantasy and suspense. I would recommend it for students over age 12.

A missing book of magic leads two teens to big trouble.
I am the author of this book and it is not out of print in Canada. Amazon.com can get hold of it through lfraser@groundwood-dm.com. It has always been a big seller for me. I hope you enjoy it.

Harper's Pictorial History: The Civil War

Pictures of the Civil War from begining to end
The pictures and articles in this book were accurate and precise. Unfortunantly, my pictorial was damaged in a house fire. I acquired it from my sister after the fire and really enjoyed the articles and photographs. I have gained a great deal of knowledge from what is left of this great book. Hopefully one day I will be able to afford this same publication by Guernssy & Alden. Hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I have, even though there was a considerable amount damaged. Enjoy this reading!!

The Book of Ebenezer Le Page
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (March, 1981)
Authors: G. B. Edwards and John Fowles
Average review score:

The Book of Ebenzer Le Page
I first read Ebenezer Le Page several years ago when it was given to me by a friend in Arizona. Being English it wasn't too much of a stretch to picture the Guernsey that Ebenezer new and loved. Of all the books I have ever read in my life this is absolutely the one I would choose to take to a desert island. I've recommended it and passed it on to family and friends as a must read. GB Edwards was a master story teller and it's fortunate that the manuscript for this beautiful novel was not destroyed after his death, which was his wish. As I reached the last few chapters of the book I felt a little depressed that it was all going to end. However, the ending is so perfect that it makes this book a treasure that you will want to keep and read again.

Delightful. Insightful. Poingnant & Cantankerous!
I loved this book, me! I grew up on that little island, barely 5 miles long and 4 miles wide, but a whole country unto itself! The place defies the physics of Geography! It's tiny, but it's vast too. Like the story of our friend Mr. Ebenezer Le Page, the simplicity of the lives of the inter connected characters, colourful and quirky, defies the closeness of the shores. GB Edwards' posthumous writings capture the essence of the folk and the place as well, possibly better, than any book about anybody, anywhere. I highly encourage anyone who reads this story to find out as much about Guernsey as possible, perhaps even go there (visit Victor Hugo's house), then read it again for the first time. Utterly enchanting!

The Lady Cornaro: Pride and Prodigy of Venice
Published in Hardcover by Attic Studio Pr (01 June, 1999)
Author: Jane Howard Guernsey
Average review score:

Review from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"This well-researched biography of the first woman to earn a university degree...conveys the majesty of the Italian baroque period and [the Lady Cornaro's] astonishing scholarship." (Donald Miller, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Senior Editor)

LADY CORNARO: Chosen as "Book Lover's Calendar" Feature
I recently noticed that the popular "Book Lover's Page-a-Day Calendar" chose to include THE LADY CORNARO as its featured "star" for December 11, 2002.

"You've probably never heard of Elena Cornaro," observes the calendar entry, "yet she holds a unique place in history. In 1678, she became the first woman in Europe to receive a Ph.D. Jane Howard Guernsey's book is the first full-length biography of this remarkably accomplished woman . . . an inspiring story."

I believe that it is highly appropriate for THE LADY CORNARO to be included in a book lover's daily calendar described as "365 days of good authors, good books and good reading . . . the calendar of passionate recommendations." Truly, THE LADY CORNARO is an outstanding book, worthy of a passionate recommendation!

One of the 100 most important people of the last 1000 years.
Although it is unlikely to happen, Elena Cornaro really should be nominated one of the hundred most important people of the last thousand years. In this carefully researched and highly readable book, Jane Howard Guernsey has successfully reconstructed the story of the Lady Cornaro's astonishing achievements and raised the questions they invite. The author has added to the recoverable information about the life of "The Cornaro," as she was affectionately known to her fellow Venetians, valuable contextual details about the life and milieu of Venice and Padua and about her tutors and contemporaries. These details elucidate both the uniqueness of the opportunities granted her and the enormous stress under which she lived as she labored to do the will of her earthly and her heavenly fathers. (Professor Rizzo's more extensive review of "The Lady Cornaro: Pride and Prodigy of Venice" may be found in "Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature," Vol. 19, No. 1, Spring 2000.)
